We are really good at remembering the big moments.
Pregnancy. A new baby. First birthdays. Graduations. Anniversaries. Big birthdays.
These milestones are important, and they absolutely deserve to be photographed and remembered.
But what about everything that happens in between?
Life Doesn't Only Happen at Milestones
Sometimes we become so focused on waiting for the next special occasion that we forget something very important:The life you are living right now is worth remembering too.
Your children are growing every single day.
The little hand that automatically reaches for yours won't always be that little. The child who wants to sit on your lap might soon decide they're far too grown-up for that.
Siblings who spend their days teasing and chasing each other will eventually grow up and build lives of their own.
Even the things that feel completely ordinary today won't always be ordinary. And sometimes, those are exactly the things we end up missing the most.
You Don't Have to Wait Until Everything Is Perfect
I hear so many reasons for putting off photographs.
"I just want to lose a little weight first."
"Let's wait until the kids are older."
"We're so busy at the moment."
"Maybe we'll do it for our anniversary."
"I don't know what we'd wear."
There will always be a reason to wait.
But while we're waiting, life keeps moving.
You don't need to be a different size. Your children don't need to be perfectly behaved.
You don't need the perfect outfits, the perfect occasion or the perfect family.
This version of your family deserves to exist in photographs too.
Not someday.Now.
Mom, Are You Actually in the Photographs?
This is something I think we need to talk about more.
Moms are often the keepers of the family memories.
You're taking the photos at birthdays. You're photographing Dad with the kids.
You're capturing the holidays, the school events and those random funny moments at home.
But when you look back through your phone... how many photographs are there of you with your children?
Not selfies.
Not the rushed photo someone reluctantly took after you handed them your phone.
Photographs where you're simply there, loving your children and being part of the story.
Your children deserve photographs with you in them too.
One day, they won't care whether you thought your arms looked too big or whether you hadn't lost the weight you wanted to lose.
They'll see their mom.
And they'll be grateful that you were there.
Family Photographs Don't Have to Feel Stiff
A family photoshoot doesn't have to mean standing perfectly in a row while everyone forces a smile at the camera.
Of course, we'll capture those beautiful portraits where everyone is looking at the camera — because Grandma definitely wants one of those!
But I also want the other moments.The cuddles.The laughter.The way your little one looks at Dad.
The sibling who can't resist irritating the other one.The child who suddenly decides they've had enough of photographs and wants to explore the studio instead.
Those little interactions are part of your family.Sometimes the photographs where everyone isn't looking at the camera are the ones that tell the biggest story.
Your Family Will Never Be Exactly Like This Again
That sounds a little dramatic, but it's true.
A year from now, everyone will be a year older.
Your toddler might suddenly look like a little boy or girl instead of a baby.
Your teenager might be preparing to leave home.
Your children may be taller than you.Your parents will be older.
Life changes quietly, often without us noticing it happening.
We usually only realise how much has changed when we look back.
That's one of the things I love most about photography.
A photograph lets us keep a tiny piece of a time we can never actually return to.
